Shifting Into Lower Gear
Digital Detox 1
Most Americans have cell phones that give them access to just about anything at anytime. Everyone takes this for granted these days, but if you are more than a few decades old, you’ll remember life before smart phones. You may even remember life before video games and personal computers. But that was a long time ago; if you remember what the term, “dialing the phone” means, then you may have ridden a horse to school as a kid, or even had brontosaurus for breakfast!
Whether or not you have the perspective to see the dramatic ways that digital technology has changed our world, our culture, and our lives, you have probably realized that there are some risks associated with the exponential growth of our use of, and dependence upon, digital technology.
Technology, like fire, is powerful and it can be used for good or bad. What we need is the wisdom to make proper use of the benefits without allowing the drawbacks to hinder our quality of life. Smart phones and other devices are to serve us; when we start serving them, something is really wrong.
I’ll be teaching two messages on this topic. Join me this week as we worship together and talk about making shifts in our priorities.
