Serving OthersTo the Core: Values that Drive UsMay 27, 2018
This year has flown by so fast that Memorial Day weekend is already here. Memorial Day tends to mark the coming of summer activity and provides the first summer camping trip for many. Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. I recently read about the tradition of wearing red poppy flowers on Memorial Day. This tradition began shortly after WWI. The seed of the red poppy flower is scattered by the wind and then lays dormant until something disturbs the ground. When the ground is disturbed, the red poppy seed germinates and grows into a large deep red flower. In the war-torn battle fields of France and Belgium, the first sign of new life to bloom after the war was the red poppy flowers. Because of the heavy fighting in these fields, the red poppy seeds germinated at a higher rate than normal. In the fields where terrible loss of life had occurred, now bloomed a blanket of vibrant red flowers. In this beautiful display of new life in these war-torn fields, the red poppy became a symbol of both the fallen soldiers and new life.
As I read about and imagined these fields, it occurred to me that God had designed the red poppy in such a way that it would produce this heart warming and inspiring picture for us. While it might seem like a small comfort in comparison to the loss of life, I am certain God intended this flower and event as an encouragement and comfort to all who lost loved ones in those fields. Imagine it: In a place where God had scattered the seeds of this beautiful flower, the most destructive war up to that point in human history unfolded. This caused the germination of these beautiful flowers to begin and eventually bloom as a reminder that God can produce new life from destruction. It’s like He planned it, letting the red poppy seed lay dormant until it was time to remind us of His goodness.
God has been working on our behalf in small and big ways since before the beginning of time. In fact, in Mark 10:45 Jesus explained His mission was to die for us so that we would have new life. Speaking of Himself, Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” During His ministry on earth, Jesus served many people through healing, feeding, comforting, and teaching them as He lived a life of sacrificial service.
This weekend we are continuing our sermon series on the core values we share at Dayspring. It seems incredibly fitting to me to be teaching on the value of Serving Others on a weekend when we remember those who served and gave all in their service.

Grace FullTo the Core: Values that Drive UsMay 19 & 20, 2018
It’s a word we hear a lot around church, but do we really know what it means? What is grace? This week, we’re returning to our sermon series, To The Core. We’re taking a deeper look at the values that define who we are as a church. This week, we will unpack what it means to live out the value of grace. At Dayspring, we want every person to experience being loved and cared for in such a way that they feel accepted, know they are valued, and have a sense of belonging. So, what does that look like and how do we do it? In today's message we study God’s Word and deepen our understanding of what it means to live a life fully devoted to Christ.-Pastor Chris

May 5 & 6, 2018Spiritual Truth...The Living and Enduring Word of GodTo the Core: Values that Drive Us
This week we continue in our series, "To the Core," by looking together at the value of spiritual growth expressed in 1 Peter 1:22-2:10. What I love about this passage is that it invites us to view spiritual growth not only through a personal lens, but a communal lens as well. Throughout it run themes of rebirth, identity, life, nourishment, and growth. It’s a passage that reminds us that spiritual growth is a dynamic, organic experience governed by the Word of truth and built upon the foundation of Christ as the cornerstone of our lives. Come join us as we learn from the living and enduring Word of God. Let us come to Him together as a community to receive His goodness and life as He builds us up as His people. And let us proclaim of His mighty acts together in our homes, in our workplace, in our church, and in our community. It truly is a gift to love the Lord and to love His people. In loving kindness,Nathan

April 28 & 29, 2018Biblical TruthTo the Core: Values that Drive Us
This past week Spring has shifted into high gear. With all the sunny weather the grass is growing, the trees are blooming, and the weeds in my garden are growing to the size of Goliath. I have been daydreaming about summer BBQs and hiking trips with family and friends. It’s interesting how sunny weather seems to create a perfect setting for allowing our thoughts to wander and dream about the things we love the most. In our heart, we always cherish time with family and friends over good food, but there is nothing like a sunny spring day to encourage our minds to wander as we relive the memories and daydream about summer plans. We can hardly help it; it’s what we love.
Jesus spoke often about the things we value in our hearts. In Luke 6, Jesus teaches that people, like trees, can be recognized by their fruit. The same is true for churches. It is easy to see what a church values by looking at how the people of that church handle the Word of God, worship, and serve. In January, you might recall, a group of Dayspring leaders gathered to daydream and discern God’s plans for our future. We evaluated the fruit of Dayspring to see what it says about our values. We found many values in our review, but seven stood out as core to the life and ministry of our church.
This weekend we are starting a seven-week sermon series that highlights these core values for our church. Our topic this weekend is the core value Biblical Truth; looking at how God’s Truth in the Bible informs and shapes how we live our lives and serve in ministry. Each week we will review another core value as we remember what we value most, and who God has created us to be as a church. - Kap Otten, Elder

Ode to JoyEveryday Joy - A Study of Philippians
Whether you listen to classical music or not, you’ve probably heard of Beethoven's Ode to Joy¸ the fourth and final movement of his Ninth Symphony. It was based loosely on a poem written by Friedrich Schiller, a German poet, playwright and historian.
The book of Philippians is the Apostle Paul’s Ode to Joy, and in this message we finish our study of this great work that encourages us to be joyful in any – and every – circumstance.
