And The Truth Shall Set You Free
Lies We Believe
January 2, 2022
Everybody knows the phrase. I’m sure you can finish it with me...
Liar, liar..... pants on fire.
Even though the rhyme is well known, apparently no one knows where it came from! There is no interesting backstory or definitive origin that can be identified. At least, not by a Google search. We tried that! And we all know they know everything!
But what I do know…is that if it really worked that way...if a liar’s pants caught on fire when a lie was told, it would be a whole lot easier to identify the lies!
Our world is saturated with lies. We hear them every day. So much so, that it can be incredibly difficult to tell the difference between what is true and what is not. We’ve heard them for so long, and from so many sources we think we should be able to trust, that we have begun to believe them. We’ve even gone so far as to build identities and lives around them.
Sadly, we too often go around not even realizing the damage these lies do to our view of God, our view of others…and even to ourselves.
Contrary to popular belief, truth is not subjective. There is only one source for truth...and it’s not us. There is no “my truth” or “your truth.” Something is either true or it isn’t. God is the source of all truth and His Word is the resource we can trust.
We are starting a brand-new year with a brand-new sermon series: Lies We Believe and the Truth That Sets Us Free.
In the absence of britches that burst into flames with every lie spoken, we will need to do the work to develop biblical discernment. I invite you to join us as we uncover some of the most pervasive and persuasive lies in our culture...and discover the truths that can give us real freedom.
Jesus said that His followers would know the truth and that the truth would set us free. But the truth won’t just fall into our laps...Jesus’ promise is based on our obedience. We are called to be intentional, faithful followers...learning, discerning, living out the truth of God’s Word so that the world can see what real truth looks like.
I invite you to join us as we learn to more faithfully follow Jesus together.
