Well, in case you missed the memo… it’s December and Christmas is just around the corner! The holiday season can be a time of joy, fun, and celebration. But it can also be a season with added pressure, obligation, and stress. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the “extra” we feel so compelled to add to our calendars and to-do lists. There is too much to do, too little time, and not enough energy to do it all! Maybe you can relate. At Dayspring, we’re celebrating the Christmas season by taking a look at four of the names or titles for Jesus that we find in Scripture. This week, we’ll be looking at His title, “Mighty God.” In the book of Jeremiah, we read these words, “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! You show unfailing love…You are the great and powerful God…You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles…You see all.” In the midst of this busy season, what a comfort it is to know that we have a Savior who is all knowing, all powerful, and always present. And His presence, power, and wisdom are available to us as we walk with Him. Now that is something to celebrate!

Wonderful CounselorHe Will Be CalledDecember 8, 2019
We’ve rounded the corner into December; and as we all know, Christmas will be here... and gone... in a flash. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle with gifts to buy, stockings to stuff, parties to attend, lights to see, presents to wrap, and cookies to bake -- and forget why we celebrate the day in the first place. This weekend at Dayspring, we’re starting a new series on four of the names for Jesus we find in scripture. My name Christopher means “Christ bearer” or “follower of Christ.” Seems appropriate, even if my parents didn’t intend it that way when they gave it to me! But it’s a far cry better than what my dad wanted to name me before they decided on that. The name Mary means “beloved;” Joseph means “May Jehovah add increase or bring blessing.” The name translated Jesus or Yeshua in Hebrew means “To deliver, to rescue.” In Isaiah 9, verse 6, one of the most well-known Christmas-related verses outside of the actual Christmas story, we read: For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These prophetic names give us a small glimpse at the character of the promised Messiah, the one who came to deliver -- to rescue us from the power of sin and death. This week, we’ll be taking a look at the name Wonderful Counselor and what it means for us to have a Savior who knows our deepest pain and who brings healing to the sickness of our hearts.

As we come to the end of November and roll into the Christmas season, we are wrapping up our series in Galatians. Paul concludes his letter to the Galatian churches by reminding them one last time about the dangers of legalism and then giving them a final challenge. His words are as applicable for us today as they were for those young Galatian believers so many centuries ago.

A Gardening CommunityGalatians: Set Free to Live FreeNovember 24, 2019
I’m not really much of a gardener. I don’t even like to mow my lawn. In fact, I have someone who takes care of my yard, keeping it healthy and looking good for me. My father-in-law, though, loves flowers – growing them, caring for them, and arranging them. He enjoys puttering in the yard, cultivating beds and pots full of colorful beauty. It takes time, effort, and energy, but the results are definitely worth it! So it is in our lives as followers of Jesus. As we continue in our study of Galatians this week, the Apostle Paul begins to get very practical! What does it look like to live by the Spirit, to walk by the Spirit, to bear fruit by the work of the Spirit? In this message we look at the first half of Galatians 6 together to learn what it means, practically speaking, to cultivate a life that bears fruit and displays the beauty of Jesus to our families, to our brothers and sisters in Christ, and to our community.

License to Kill...'Em With LoveGalatians: Set Free to Live FreeNovember 17, 2019
I remember the day I turned 16. I was on a short-term mission trip serving churches around Oregon. My team made it a great day filled with memories as I celebrated with 800 of my closest friends. Yeah, you heard the number correctly. Although I knew only about 10 of them, it was still a pretty big birthday bash. The only bad thing about being on a short term mission trip the day you turn 16 is that you have to wait another 6 weeks to head to the DMV so that you can take your dreaded driving test, knowing that the DMV employee is the only person standing between you and your independence. Talk about pressure! But then you have your license--Freedom! You can go anywhere, do anything, conquer the world, no longer walking or riding your bike, escaping the horrible oppression of your family... (OK, I might have made that one up... Sorry Mom!)
But you get it--a license to finally go where you want to go, do what you want to do, and live your life the way you want to... Or so you thought, until that first time you saw flashing lights in your rear-view mirror and were reminded that it really isn't a license to do anything. There are boundaries.
This week as we continue our study of Galatians, Paul begins to unpack the rest of his freedom message. He spent a lot of time focused on legalism, but there's another extreme he wants his readers to be aware of: license. Paul wants the Galatian believers (and us) to know that not only have we been FREED from something, we've been freed FOR something. The freedom we have as believers has a purpose, and that purpose is found in between the extremes of legalism and license. So what does it look like to live out our freedom in Christ? That's the question we're looking at this week.

Is Jesus Enough?Galatians: Set Free to Live FreeNovember 10, 2019
Arthur Schiff was an ingenious salesman and a businessman who ran his own marketing company for 23 years. He sold everything, and he sold it by the trainload: pots and pans, pantyhose, wrinkle cream, teeth whiteners, windshield wipers, scratch removers and weed whackers. There wasn’t anything that man couldn’t sell. Anyone who ever watched late-night television in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s knows Schiff's work, even if they don’t know his name. For more than 30 years, Schiff created more than 1,800 television infomercials with some very memorable catchphrases. His most famous originated in a commercial for the popular Ginsu knives: “But wait, there’s more!”
TV pitchmen like Ron Popeil and Billy Mays have used Schiff’s famous exclamation since then to convince countless more consumers to buy products that they don’t really need. As our continuation of our study of Galatians, we see that the same thing was happening in the churches of Galatia. The legalistic Judaizers had been selling a sketchy bill of goods to these young-in-faith believers…insisting that their Jesus-only belief system could be enhanced by, or was in need of, "more." But Paul would not stand for their attempts to convince or confuse these young churches into compromising their by-grace-alone, through-Christ-alone, faith. His bottom line question for both the Gentile believers, and for us: Is Jesus enough? Not Jesus plus rules, not Jesus plus religious traditions, not Jesus plus cultural ceremonies…Just Jesus. In order to really live in the freedom that God has given us, we must be confident of our answer to that question.

Galatians: Set Free to Live Free

In case you’ve been living under a rock the past week or so, Kanye West has recently publicly proclaimed his faith in Jesus. If you’ve been under a rock for so long that you don’t know who Kanye is, well…you have a problem only Google can solve. The response to Kanye’s declaration of faith has been mixed, to put it nicely. There are those who are celebrating his surrender to Jesus, but there are also some who are scoffing at it. And some of the loudest scoffers? They’re people who claim to follow Christ. Somewhere along the way, I think they’ve missed the point. No one is beyond the reach of God’s love and grace.
As we continue our study in Galatians this Sunday, the apostle Paul uses an Old Testament story to explain and emphasize his point: There can be no fluctuating between law and faith, no combining them together in our approach to God. Like oil and water, the two don’t mix. We must understand what legalism is, what it looks like in our world and our own lives, and stand firmly against it. - Pastor Chris Voigt

Galatians: Set Free to Live Free
October 27, 2019
In our sermon series, Set Free to Live Free, we’re looking at the first half of Galatians 4 this week. In this passage, Paul talks about what it means to be a child of God; to be adopted into His family. Knowing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, who we are as a children of God is essential if we are to live and walk in the freedom that God intends for us!

Galatians: Set Free to Live Free
October 13, 2019
Today we continue our study of Paul’s letter to the Galatian churches, looking at the first half of chapter 3 and learning what the Apostle Paul has to say about faith.
As a church family, we are leaning in and digging deep into God’s Word. We want to be people who live out our faith in ways that make a difference in our families, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods. We want to experience the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in our own lives and model for others what it looks like to follow Jesus. Knowing Him truly does make all the difference!
