Tell Me the Stories of Jesus

Fanny Crosby was one of the most prolific hymn writers in history. Through the course of her life she wrote more than 9,000 hymns. In fact, sometimes she used pen names for some of them so that the hymnals would have other names besides hers.Fanny fell ill at just two months of age. While her parents waited for a doctor to arrive, a quack pretending to be a real doctor put a mustard poultice on her eyes that left her blinded. Her love of poetry that began at the age of 15 led eventually to the writing of some of our most beloved hymns, such as Blessed Assurance, To God Be the Glory, and Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross. In 1880, she wrote Tell Me the Story of Jesus, the inspiration for the title of this weekend’s message in Matthew. In this message we explore the deeper meanings of some of the parables Jesus was most known for. They may have been stories that the crowds didn’t understand; but for his disciples, they were filled with wisdom and training for the Kingdom of Heaven. As followers of Jesus, the wisdom and training contained in these stories are just as important for us, in our time and our culture, as it was for His disciples. Jesus Christ is the hope of the world. We have the incredible privilege of telling His story and pointing people – our family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers – to Him.Pastor Chris

Today we dig in to more of what Matthew has to teach about Jesus. We’ll be considering the different responses that people had to Jesus; who He was and what He taught. And in the process, we’ll reflect on our own response to Him. The claims of Jesus don’t leave room for us to be neutral about His message. Each of us must consider His teaching and respond.

This Sunday is a fantastic day for celebrating the blessings of the dads in your life. Our Heavenly Father's goodness, faithfulness, and lovingkindness toward us are worth all of our devotion. We’re looking carefully this weekend at the cost of discipleship. Matthew outlines for us just what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, not just a child of God. As a faith family we are committed to growing together in becoming fully devoted (or discipled) followers of Christ. Sometimes that involves risk; always it requires obedience.

The idea of Jesus being a person who existed in history as a living breathing person is something that people can accept. The proof that is presented is fairly compelling to convince skeptics. Jesus lived and had a good message of love and peace, but only that. The hang up for most people is what He claimed to do during his time on earth. In contrast, Matthew’s gospel presents Jesus as having the power to control the weather, heal others, and do more than simply speak words over people. We see a Jesus who has full authority over all the earth, and showed that He is indeed God and not just a man with a good message. We live under a God who has control over all, but do we live like He is in control? Is our day dedicated to God who is omnipotent and loves us deeply?

It’s Friday afternoon and, according to my weather app, there’s an amazing and beautiful weekend ahead (if you like sunshine)! Do you know what else is amazing and beautiful? Our time worshiping and learning together as a church family on Sunday mornings! An afternoon at the beach or a hike in the mountains might be a fantastic way to refresh your soul on Sunday afternoon, but don’t miss out on the best refreshment of all: gathering with the body of Christ. We are a family, loving one another, encouraging one another, growing in faith and obedience to Jesus together. Our time together is precious, and we look forward to every opportunity! This week we’re taking a deeper look at Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), and learning more about what it means to live out the better righteousness that is ours through Jesus.

This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day. And though for many of us it means an extra day to play, or do yard work, or gather with family and friends for a BBQ, that’s not what this day is about. Established in the 1800’s, Memorial Day honors those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Across our nation this weekend, those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom will be remembered and honored. We often hear the phrase, “Freedom isn’t free.” And it is very true. We want to express our gratitude to those who have given all to protect and defend our freedom and to their families for their tremendous sacrifice. Today we gather as a church family to celebrate and worship Jesus, the One who gave up all of heaven’s glory and came to earth to give His life, so that we could experience freedom from sin and a restored relationship with God. We're looking at Jesus' teaching in Matthew, chapters 5-7, which most of us know as the Sermon on the Mount. We’re taking the “big picture view” this weekend to understand the heart of what Jesus is teaching in these chapters. Next week, we’ll dive more deeply into the specifics.

Have you seen any good movies lately? If 10 friends went to the same movie, and afterward you asked each of them to tell you about it, you’d most likely get 10 different descriptions of what the movie was about. Each of us respond or interact with a story differently. That’s part of what is fun about discussing things like books or movies with others who have also experienced them. I’m always fascinated by the things I miss in a storyline that someone else totally picks up on. And likewise, I see things that others miss. We’re jumping back into our series in the book of Matthew this week and picking up the story of Jesus’ ministry with the calling of His first disciples in the second half of chapter 4. We’ll be looking at the question of what it really means to follow Jesus. For most of us, it’s a familiar passage. But, as with other stories, perhaps there are pieces of it that you’ve missed or need to be reminded of in a fresh way. Of all the stories in this world that have been told, this is the one that matters most. The story of Jesus and His call for you to follow Him. In this message we continue in our journey to know Jesus more deeply and follow Him more faithfully.

Happy Mother’s Day! Today we celebrate the amazing moms - the grandmas, sisters, aunts, and friends - in all our lives. We are grateful for you! This day can also be one that is filled with deep heartache, for so many reasons. If Mother’s Day is painful for you, we want you to know that we care. Whatever the emotions that fill your heart today, we know that God is present with us in both joy and sorrow. We’re taking a break from our Matthew series this week and looking at what it means to abide in Christ: to be sustained by Him, to be fruitful, to flourish, and grow to be like Christ. In every season, we can thrive as we choose to abide in Christ.

Have you looked? I mean, really looked, outside? In case you haven’t noticed, the sunshine is sparkling, the sky is beautiful, and the trees are amazing shades of green! It is GLORIOUS! What an incredible God we have who fills our world with beauty for us to enjoy! Creation declares the glory of God; it witnesses to His creativity, grace, wisdom, power, and greatness. This is the second week of a new series on the life and ministry of Jesus. We’re working our way through the book of Matthew, and we’ll be taking a look at four witnesses to Jesus' identity as the Son of God, the promised Messiah. It's a gorgeous Sunday morning. And there’s no better way to kick off a new week than by celebrating our great God and learning more about walking in obedience as followers of Jesus.

We’re launching a new sermon series this weekend, The Gospel of Matthew: The Promised King. We are excited to study the life and ministry of Jesus! Throughout the weeks and months ahead we’ll learn more about who He is, how He lived, served, and loved. The desire of our hearts as a church family is to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community and to authentically reflect His heart for the people in our neighborhoods. In order to represent Him well, we must know Him well! In today's message we pursue a deeper understanding of who Jesus is.
