Close Your Lips ‘til You Get a Grip! (James 1:19-21)
Saturday May 17, 2014
Saturday May 17, 2014
Have you ever said things you didn’t mean? I’d guess we all have. Ironically,
many people save their worst expressions of anger for those they love. Anger
explodes in the homes of even the most reasonable people. Persistent quarrels
can split families. Unresolved conflicts can also tear people apart inside. You
probably know the gnawing pain of tension and bitterness.
We’re in a new series of messages based on Bible verses having to do with
relationships. This weekend we’ll dive into James 1:19-21 where we will learn some
principles about communication. Due to disappointments and offenses, we all get
angry with others. When we feel ourselves getting mad, we are faced with how to
respond. Our key verses for this week provide practical advice that will help
us to avoid reacting in a way that damages relationships.
At the centerpiece of the passage we find a trio of simple statements:
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
We will unpack and apply these ideas as we gather for worship. I hope to see
you.

Change for the Good (Romans 12:2)
Saturday May 03, 2014
Saturday May 03, 2014
Last week, our key verse
was Romans 12:1… Therefore,
I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living
sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.
This week, we’ll look at Romans 12:2 & discover how to make the
response 12:1 calls us to make...Do
not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. All of us want to change
‘for the good’. Knowing the key ingredients to change makes all the
difference in terms of our spiritual maturity. Join us this week as we
look at three keys to change that result in spiritual maturity and God's glory.

God's Perspective on Worship (Romans 12:1)
Thursday Apr 24, 2014
Thursday Apr 24, 2014
There are many hot topics discussed in
churches these days, yet few are more
personal (and often emotionally charged) than how we should worship God.
Differences in form & function of public worship abound; congregations have
split over music styles. My aim this weekend isn’t to advocate a style of music
or the order of a weekend service. Instead, the perspective on worship
will be much more personal. Each of us must ask ourselves this question: Am
I worshipping God with all that I have in response to all that He has done for
me? True worship is a ‘lifestyle response’ to who God is and
what He’s done for each of us. Come this weekend and get a fresh
perspective about what true worship’s all about…from His perspective.

Why Do We Celebrate Easter? (Romans 10:9)
Saturday Apr 19, 2014
Saturday Apr 19, 2014
We’ve been studying key texts in the Book of Romans and this
weekend we will look at Romans 10:9. It is a perfect text to emphasize the
importance of the resurrection of Jesus. It says, “If you confess with your
mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the
dead, you will be saved.” Wow, that it pretty pointblank, isn’t it? This verse
teaches that accepting the reality of the resurrection is absolutely essential.
You might wonder, “Why is so much dependent upon my acceptance of the fact that
Jesus is alive? What is so significant about the reality of the resurrection?”
I’m glad you asked. Come worship with us as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection
and come to better understand its significance.

In Good Things and in Bad (Romans 8:28)
Tuesday Apr 15, 2014
Tuesday Apr 15, 2014
When
we are facing tough times, we can’t imagine how any of the pain could
contribute to a positive purpose in our lives. When the escrow falls through,
or you don’t get into the college of your dreams, or your boyfriend dumps you,
it is easy to assume that no good can come from your negative circumstances.
When time is passing and we’re not getting better, we jump to the conclusion
that God is distant and uninvolved in our lives. All we can see at such times
is our suffering. We don’t always understand the meaning of it all when we’re
in the middle of misery. But sometimes we are granted the perspective to look
back on trials and see how God was working all along according to our best
interest.
This weekend we come to a classic verse in the Book of Romans that tells us
that God can even use bad things in our lives toward a good end. Rom. 8:28 is
often misunderstood and misapplied. Come worship with us as we take this verse
apart, examine it carefully, and put together a better understanding of how “in
all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called
according to his purpose.”

The Solution to the Problem (Romans 6:23)
Sunday Apr 06, 2014
Sunday Apr 06, 2014
Have you ever seen the words Jesus Saves written in a public place? I didn’t know what that meant at first and I still don’t know why anyone would write it on the wall in a bathroom. Some call this e-vandalism: evangelistically motivated graffiti: just put the gospel out there and hope someone responds. But there is a problem with hit and run evangelistic techniques. One reason why the gospel is often rejected is that the good news is meaningless to people who don’t believe the bad news. No one follows the prescription if they don’t believe the diagnosis. When I finally received the good news that Jesus Saves, it was due to the fact that I accepted the bad news that I was lost and in need of salvation. Once I realized the severity of my situation, I was more than willing to admit I needed help. This weekend we will look at a classic verse, Rom. 6:23, which provides a clear diagnosis of our problem and then presents the solution: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This is a simple summary of Christianity. I know you will get a lot out of looking at this verse, word by word. A testimony and a skateboarding video will tie into the message as well. Come find out how it will all fit together.
